CHAPTER TWELVE

Emme stifled a groan and tried to keep her eyes from rolling into the back of her head as Jordan’s thumbs kneaded the arch of her foot. His fingers were magic. Something he’d proven several times over the last couple of days. They’d spent a lot of time in bed. Or the floor. And the couch.

She shifted and stifled another groan for a different reason.

He stopped rubbing. “You okay?”

She looked over the top of the book she’d found, down her body and up his to where he lay with his head on the other arm rest. His green eyes stared at her with concern. “Yeah. Just getting more comfortable.” He asked her that a lot — if she was okay or in pain. The foot rub was a result of her saying her feet were killing her from all the walking they did earlier that day in the souq.

At times it felt as if he were coddling her. Taking care of her because she was a responsibility instead of a desire. Then there were times like this. She didn’t know too many guys who would spend an afternoon rubbing a woman’s feet just because she said they hurt.

The corners of his mouth tilted and he winked before going back to watching the soccer game on TV. God, she loved his smile. He didn’t do it enough. She shouldn’t complain. When he did smile, it was always directed at her.

He had moments where he seemed to get lost in his head. She knew he was worried about his unit. He checked his email at least three times a day.

They had such a finite amount of time together before they went back to their real lives. Separately. An urgency to jam as much as she could into the next week threatened to overwhelm her.

“Have you ever been married,” she asked.

He looked back at her, eyes wide. “Where did that come from?”

She shrugged and rested the book on her chest. “I was just thinking I don’t know anything about what you’ve been doing for the last fifteen years, other than being in the Army.”

“Hmm. Well, to answer your question, no. I’ve never been married.” He pulled her other foot onto his lap and started rubbing.

“How come?”

He sighed. “Never found the right girl at the right time. I came kind of close once, but it ended up not working out.”

“Why?”

His brows drew together. “You really want to know this?”

She nodded. Yes. No. Hell, she wasn’t sure. She didn’t even know what made her start with this line of questioning other than wanting to know more about him. Why hadn’t she started with something simple like his favorite color?

“It was about six or seven years ago. We’d been dating for almost two years. I’d been deployed a couple of times and we’d made it through without any real issues. Then I got selected for Ranger school. She said she didn’t want to be married to a guy that was never going to be home. She broke it off and moved out the next week.
